ICC ‘puts’ Pakistan cricket affairs on right track

With the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) having started working on the guidelines of the International Cricket Council (ICC), let us hope our topsy turvy cricket affairs are put on the right track. It is, however, disappointing that what should have been done by PCB chief Ijaz Butt and his predecessors at their own is being done under the instructions of the ICC and that too when the world cricket body threatened to suspend Ijaz or the PCB if their instructions were not followed. To ensure prompt implementation the PCB hurriedly drafted a code of conduct for players and got it signed before the Pakistan team departed for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to play ODI and Test series against South Africa.

The ICC code of conduct existed for all times while there was a similar code of the PCB also. One fails to understand why were these codes not strictly enforced by the PCB chairman, a serious neglect which resulted in the players going astray to involve themselves in undesirable activities. If the PCB administration was run properly, the players should have been briefed about the codes of conduct and other instructions, rules and regulations. In addition the copies of these documents both in English and Urdu should have been issued to them for detailed study.

The attitude of ‘yesmanship’, which prevails in the board, must end and officials who understand cricket must pick up the courage to speak against any thing going wrong. Similarly, members of the so-called ‘Advisory Board’ should wake up and play an active part in the affairs of cricket. The chaos occurred because rather than acting as a democratic head Ijaz assumed the powers of a ‘dictator’. With one stroke of pen or a word of mouth he could do what ever he liked. Frequent appointments and dismissals of board officials became a routine with the result that whatever unity, harmony and understanding existed amongst them was destroyed. The responsibility for such a state of affairs rests partly with the federal ministry of sports and the sports committees of the Senate and National Assembly. They have frequent meetings to discuss cricket affairs but remain oblivious to the fact that a very vital issue is lying in the ‘cold storage’ for years now. It is the ‘draft PCB Constitution’. It will surprise many cricket lovers to know that the PCB is running without a constitution for the last 10 years. The document, which is supposed to be approved by the President of Pakistan, was discussed at various levels of the government and dumped. Sincere efforts were not made to reach a consensus on its contents and got it approved. Once the constitution is promulgated, the powers to run the PCB will be automatically divided between the chairman and the advisory council, marking an end to dictatorship.

The President of Pakistan, who is the patron-in-chief of the PCB, and the ministry of sports must take notice of the dictatorial policies going on in the t board and take immediate action to stop them. It is not necessary for the PCB chief to visit every country. When touring abroad, the team’s affairs are supposed to be handled by the manager and the tour management committee. Is not it amazing that Ijaz made 30 foreign trips during the last two years staying abroad for 233 days and spending around Rs15 million from the PCB’s coffers. It has become a common practice to send a horde of officials with the team. The team that left for the UAE the other day carried eight officials including a masseur. I think such a gang of officials is a bad influence on the team. Since each one of them has players of his liking in the team. Such ‘favouritism’ is bound to create groups in the team. In our times there used to be only 2-3 officials with a touring squad and the results were much better. A lot depends on our team’s performance against South Africa. The inclusion of Younus Khan in the side is surely a plus point but the eyes of the cricket lovers are focused more on Misbahul Haq’s captaincy. An impressive performance and good behaviour of the team can give a new lease of life to Ijaz.

Adjusting in team will not be a problem,Younis

Former Pakistan captain, Younis Khan has said that adjusting in team will not be a problem for him as he is enjoying prime fitness and form. “I played quality county cricket in England and I had a good stint in domestic cricket which helped me in maintaining fitness and form and he will not be facing any difficulty while adjusting in teams during the tour of United Arab Emirates to play South Africa “,he said here on Thursday at Gadaffi stadium.

“ I am eager to resume my international career and playing for Pakistan is always a big honour and I will go all out to justify my inclusion “,said Younis who settled his differences with Pakistan Cricket Board after a meeting with its Chairman, Ijaz Butt on Wednesday.

He said a good performance in one match will help him to click and then onward there will be no looking back.

To a question, he said, he does not feel down graded for apologising with Chairman PCB because he considers him his elder and seeking apology from an elder does not mean that he has lost his personal respect.

“ I did not make it an issue of personal pride,PCB extended respect and love to me and I showed a similar gesture by setting aside everything and met with the Chairman PCB and in that meeting all doubts were removed and now I want to concentrate on cricket against South Africa “,he maintained.

The stylish batsman said who had earlier announced to retire from T-20 cricket said he is ready to reserve his decision and is available to all versions of cricket.

Ijaz shouldn’t seek second term, says Wasim Akram

Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram feels that Ijaz Butt seeking another term as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman is nothing but ridiculous. Speaking to ESPN, Akram said: “If Ijaz has asked for another term then hats off to him. The whole of Pakistan and world cricket is after him. Pakistan cricket is in a mess, there is no leadership and amidst all this, to ask for another term, well what can I say. This shows that his advisors are not giving him the right directions.”

Ijaz’s term (October 6, 2008 – October 31, 2010) as PCB chief has been marred by controversies. After the match-fixing and spot-fixing rows, Ijaz was also criticised for his off-the-cuff remarks on England players involved in fixing and his extravagant spending on foreign tours. Not to forget the infamous terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore. Akram feels Ijaz’s term has been tumultuous. He said: “Ijaz has been unable to hold forte. He is not a man in command. Pakistan cricket is in doldrums. There is no leadership and it was the chairman’s role to keep all these things under check. He has failed.”

The selection board has also been criticised for not consulting coach Waqar Younis while picking the team for the upcoming series against South Africa in UAE. Akram once again blames the whole incident as a management failure. “I strongly believe that the presence of the captain and coach is a must in the process of team selection. It’s fine that it is a selectors’ job, but again it is a team game. If you keep fighting amongst yourselves then where is the leadership? The ball once again falls in Ijaz’s court. He should take care of all these things.”

Sohail calls on government to revive Pakistan cricket

Sohail calls on government to revive Pakistan cricketAamer Sohail, the former Pakistan captain, has criticised the nation's government for failing to put a check on the various crises affecting cricket in the country.

Several Pakistan cricketers were punished in the aftermath of a winless tour of Australia in 2009-10 and, most recently, Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were provisionally suspended by the ICC over suspicion of being involved in the spot-fixing controversy during the tour of England.

Sohail called on the patron-in-chief of the PCB, the Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari, to step in.

"The government must realise it [cricket] is not just a sport in Pakistan, a country where there are so many religious, political and other divisions," Sohail told Geo TV.

"In a country where people are facing so many crises and problems, the government must realise cricket has always served as a unifying factor.

"The chief patron must wake up to the reality and the seriousness of the crisis.

Good governance is all about recognising the potential of cricket to unify the people and give them happiness and joy in their lives." Sohail, not for the first time, was critical of Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, over the current state of affairs.

Sohail had served as the director of Pakistan's National Cricket Academy, before quitting in July 2009, because of differences with Butt.

"I am really surprised that a seasoned political party like the Pakistan Peoples Party has still not realised that things are not moving forward with this present set-up and chairman," Sohail said.

Pakistan recently announced their team for the tour of the UAE, where they will face South Africa in each of the three formats.

Misbah-ul-Haq was included in the team and, in a surprising move, made captain for the Test series.

Younis Khan, whose ban after the Australia series was overturned, wasn't picked.

"For no rhyme or reason Ijaz Butt refuses to give clearance for Younis to be in the Pakistan team.

If Younis has committed a major crime or indiscipline then it is the duty of the board to let the people know so that this chapter is closed once for all," Sohail said.

"Enough is enough and I don't think any former chairman of the board has faced so much criticism and opposition for his manner of running cricket affairs.

Yet the government appears to be blind to popular public opinion even though it preaches democracy."

Match 2 World Cup 2011 Kenya v New Zealand at Chennai

Group A will play the second match of world cup 2011 at Chennai where Kenya will face New Zealand. Both the teams had not played much matches against each other but experts took New Zealand as the favorites for the match.

Kenya team though have good experience of playing in world cup still they don't have any real tournament apart from one where they manager to reach the super six. This team need a super coach from Australia or Pakistan and then perhaps team fortunes will change one day.

the true focus of this tour is Zimbabwe resurgence, rather than South Africa search for early-season fluency, and the first match on Friday, 8th october, 2010 at Bloemfontein - which will also be the first time the two teams have met in a Twenty20 international - will be a significant indicator as to the extent of the country's redevelopment. in the game and timing will be 12:30 GMT 14:30 local 18:00 IST.

Sunshine days for Indian Cricket

The Indian Cricket is perhaps going through one of its best periods and this week has been especially special for the entire team as well as the choicest few, the real stalwarts of the Indian cricket team. The celebrations went underway on October 5, 2010 after team India lodged a historic win against the Australians in the first match of Border-Gavasakar test series. The one wicket win did not come easy and all kudos to VVS Laxman for inspiring the team to such a historic win.

By the fourth day of the match, India had to chase a score of 216 in order to win and before noon, it had already lost 8 wickets for a meager total of 128. Laxman and Ishant Sharma shared a partnership of 81 runs and literally all hopes were doomed when Ishant was given LBW out by the umpire. And the rest they say is history as following nail biting moments, VVS Laxman and Pragyan Ojha saw India to a glorious finish. With this win, Indian managed to maintain its number one ranking in international test cricket. The moment of great gloom was when master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was given out by the umpire when he was only two runs away from scoring another test century.

Cricket world reeling from storm of allegations and rumours: PCB chief

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt has promised to co-operate fully with all investigations arising from the spot-fixing scandal that tainted his country’s recent tour of England, as he arrived back here on Wednesday following a bridge-building trip to London.

During the visit, he apologised to the ECB chairman, Giles Clarke, for claiming that England’s cricketers had accepted a bribe to lose last month’s third ODI at The Oval. In a statement issued on his return to Pakistan on Wednesday, Ijaz said that the cricket world ‘is reeling from a storm of allegations and rumours’, but sought to distance himself from the allegations that he himself had perpetuated by claiming that his reference to ‘loud and clear talk in bookie circles’ regarding England’s cricketers had merely been an attempt to point out that Pakistan is not the only country under suspicion.

India will take on Australia in the first test match of the two test match series at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Chandigarh. Harbhajan Singh is doubtful for the first Test as he has an ankle injury. Ricky Ponting has doubts, He says “India might be trying to put a smokescreen and they still have spinners like Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha to take his place.”

India have performed really well in the Test for the last few years. Australia’s performance has dropped significantly in Test. Australia are at the fourth position in the Test and number one in ODI. Ponting hopes to change horror script in India

Ponting, who averages 54.66 overall, has rarely tasted success in India during his illustrious career. He has scored 438 runs in 12 Tests in India with just one century, averaging 20.85.

"It's a place that I've never mastered. I've never mastered batting in these conditions," the Australian skipper told reporters on Thursday.

"I felt that in the last series over here (in 2008), I took some really big strides in becoming a better player on the subcontinent. My first hundred in Bangalore at the start of the series was satisfying.

"I made 80-odd in Delhi. There were some positive signs for me last time and learning a bit more about the conditions and the Indian bowlers gives me a chance to hopefully have a good series."

Ponting said his team were keen to seize the early initiative as it would not be easy to bounce back into the short series.

"You don't want to be going behind in a two-Test series, that's for sure. It's hard to work your way back into it from there," he said.

SORRY IS HARDEST WORD FOR BUTT

Ijaz Butt last night withdrew his match-fixing comments about the England cricket team. But crucially he failed to apologise for his claim that "the talk in bookies circles is that several England players took enormous sums of money to lose the third one dayer".

The Pakistan Cricket Board chairman can be thankful his ECB counterpart Giles Clarke allowed him to save face by not using the words "sorry" or "apologise" in his statement.

ICC Cricket World Cup Opening Match - World Cup 2011
Feb 19, 2011 will be the day when the opening match of the ICC cricket world cup 2011 will be played between the two co-hosts India and Bangladesh at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh. Sri Lanka is the third hosting country, initially the other country Pakistan was also one of the co-hosts for the world cup but later ICC ruled out any possibility of world cup matches in Pakistan due to security concern, remember Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked by terrorists in Pakistan while they were on there way to the Stadium and many players had a narrow escape.

Coming back to the first match of the cricket world cup 2011 between India and Bangladesh. Both the teams are in Group B. England, West Indies, Ireland, Netherlands and South Africa are the other teams in the Group B.

India may seem to be the favorites for the world cup opener match however If you go by stats then the only world cup match played between India and Bangladesh was won by Bangladesh, also match in being played in Bangladesh thus the Bangla team can be a surprise package in the opening of the 2011 cricket world cup.

Pakistan match-fixing claims: Lord's remains genteel as crisis rumbles on

According to the anthropologist Kate Fox, our typical reaction to offensive behaviour extends no further than "frowns and glares accompanied by heavy sighs, pointed coughs, tutting and muttering".

Fox could have found more evidence to support her thesis at Lord's on Monday. The English members of a 20,000-strong crowd remained scrupulously polite – on the surface, at least – while privately bemoaning the fact that cricket had been taken over by renegades and shysters. "You just can't believe what you see on the field any more," said Jonathan, 27, from Essex. So why did he come to the game then? "Well, I bought the ticket in May, and Lord's is always a nice day out. Plus, the sun's shining.

England batsman Jonathan Trott and Pakistan cricketer Wahab Riaz needed to be pulled apart by England's Graham Gooch after the pair grabbed each other's throats and threw cricket equipment at one another during the warm-up for the two sides' fourth, one-day international.

Apparently Trott was heard saying to Riaz – one of the five players on the Pakistan team to be under investigation – “How much money are you going to make from the bookies?

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said: "When Riaz was returning after warming up, Trott called him a 'match-fixer' and that he was harming Test cricket and hit his face with the pad.

Andrew Strauss: We were absolutely determined to win against Pakistan

The relief Andrew Strauss felt was obvious. You could see it in his smile and hear it in his voice. The least-loved series has finally come to an end, England winning the final match by 121 runs. When the last wicket fell England celebrated as though they had won a major trophy, not a tinpot cup for yet another one-day series at the end of a long summer.

This match mattered, to the players and to the supporters who filled the Rose Bowl, their roars still echoing around the rafters long after the final ball had been bowled. When Strauss left his post-match press conference he was treated to an ovation from the fans waiting outside. After everything that has happened these last few weeks there was more than the series at stake last night. England were motivated by stronger fuel than the simple desire to win their sixth straight rubber. Asked by one mischievous journalist if he had had "nightmare visions" of Pakistan lifting the trophy, Strauss paused, chuckled and admitted that actually yes, he had. Typically it was the kind of question he would have been too diplomatic to answer.

Ijaz Butt, PCB asked to pay compensation to ECB

Dawn learnt on Friday that the ECB has not only demanded an unreserved apology but has also dictated the exact words that apology should comprise. Moreover, the apology will be from both the PCB chairman and the PCB, sources further said. The ECB also demanded from the PCB to pay the legal costs of the case and in addition pay a substantial sum in damages to each member of the England cricket team, personally.

Sources said the PCB chairman was certainly not expecting such harsh reaction from the ECB after he had tried clarifying the basis of his statement. Ijaz was reported as saying in the press that there was loud and high talk in the bookies’ circle that English players made lot of money for losing the third One-day International against Pakistan on Sept 17.

Cricket: Vettori on guard against complacency

Skipper Daniel Vettori has warned against complacency as the Black Caps headed to Bangladesh today for a five-match one-day cricket series that has next year's World Cup as backdrop. New Zealand scored an easy 3-0 sweep when the two sides met in New Zealand in February, but Vettori said the Tigers would be a "completely different" proposition on the own soil.

He pointed to the limited-overs series that Bangladesh hosted on their return home against England. While Bangladesh again went down 3-0, "they pushed them hard the whole series", he said. "If we go over there expecting to walk over them like we did here, we'll be in for a bit of fright.

With Andrew Flintoff's retirement joining the ongoing corruption enquiries and the county championship finale at the top of the agenda, England's ninth match of the summer against an under-strength Pakistan side is in danger of feeling like a sideshow.

But Surrey say they have sold virtually every one of their 23,000 tickets, so the atmosphere in Kennington should be lively enough – if a little chilly given the 1pm start."It is a bit frustrating what's happened to the back end of this summer," Graeme Swann said on Thursday, in a tactful allusion to the spot-fixing scandal. "But if we can get a nice boozy crowd in here, doing the Mexican wave as normal, then hopefully we can focus on the cricket again.

Pakistan cricket team face fresh spot-fixing investigation

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched an investigation into yesterday's one-day international between England and Pakistan following allegations that a scoring pattern in Pakistan's innings was prearranged.

The ICC said the investigation was based on information received from the Sun newspaper. The ICC chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, said: "A source informed the Sun newspaper that a certain scoring pattern would emerge during certain stages of the match and, broadly speaking, that information appeared to be correct.

Afridi rubbishes spot-fixing allegations in third ODI

Pakistan's ODI captain Shahid Afridi  has rubbished allegations of spot fixing following his side's 23-run victory in the third one-dayer against England at the Oval. The match had come under the scanner following claims by British tabloid 'The Sun' that bookies knew details of Pakistan's innings even before Friday's third one-dayer began. The ICC in a statement said that investigation is warranted as information about a certain scoring pattern appeared to be "correct".

The allegations, however, have left Afridi shocked. "I thought we played hard cricket and tried our level best to win the match. I just see these new allegations as an attempt to put pressure on the team," Afridi was quoted as saying on Geo TV.

Mumbai v South Australia Champions League T20 Match

Top batsman, top bowlers and a solid hitter, Mumbai Indians team has got a brilliant combination needed for being number one cricket club team. They missed the first match by a small margin and today they must win the match today. Being a solid they still haven't any title to there name. They had a bad IPL 1 and lost IPL 2 final due to some bad captaincy and team strategies. Here are the points why Mumbai Indian lost the IPL 2 final:
  • Injured Sachin - An injured horse can win a race only in stories not in real life, Sachin himself should have taken the call not to play the final (perhaps selfishness come to play here) Jaaysurya or any other experienced ply in the team should have lead the team in the final
  • Pollard coming late: He should rather be given the chance to open the innings in bing matched.
that was the thing of pst now for todays match what Mumbai Indian need is they play the best combination i.e. players like Bravo and Saurabh Tiwary cannot be kept in the dugg out are and the major are of concerns is despite having 5 leading bowlers why part time bowlers bowled 4 overs as in the first match.

Test cricket is still exciting: Sehwag

Test cricket may be losing popularity with Twenty20 catching the imagination of the younger generation, but swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag says the longer version of the game has never been more exciting than it is today.

"There used to be so many draws in Test matches that would keep the crowds away but things have changed. We are getting more and more results in Test cricket and even a target of 350 can be chased in a day in a Test match.Cricket has not changed. A few innovations have come to make it more attractive. The approach has changed in some ways. Once a total of 200 was considered a winning one in One-day cricket. Not any more," Sehwag said on the changing trends in cricket.

Diplomatic blames PCB over match-fix laws

Leading English language daily Dawn reported on Thursday that High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan wrote a letter of complaint to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also patron of the PCB. Hasan said in a two-page letter that the PCB officials “kept the diplomats unaware about the laws of ICC relating to alleged match-fixing.

“The PCB management has not guided the High Commission at any point,” Hasan wrote. The ICC suspended Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir over match fixing allegations while fourth player Wahab Riaz was questioned by Scotland Yard on Tuesday. The London police also interrogated Butt, Asif and Amir earlier this month, but did not press any criminal charges against them.

Spot-fixing not confined to Pakistan cricket: Imran

Pakistan's former captain, Imran Khan fears that the menace of spot-fixing in cricket could be a much more malignant problem then it is being perceived to be after the allegations and suspension of three Pakistani players in England.

Imran said in a television interview that he believed that spot-fixing/betting might be going on uninterrupted in many countries and was not just a problem confined to Pakistan cricket.

Pakistan was without three players at the center of an alleged betting scandal, who were suspended and charged with breaches of the sport’s anti-corruption laws last week.

Collingwood delighted with easy win

World champions England did their best to put cricket's week of crisis behind them as they returned to the Twenty20 format with a five-wicket victory over Pakistan.

Captain Paul Collingwood was delighted with a "100%" performance which owed much to an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 67 between Eoin Morgan and Michael Yardy, to aid the recovery from a mid-innings wobble in reply to 126 for four at the SWALEC Stadium.

"I'm absolutely delighted," said Collingwood. "Our strategies seem to be working in the Twenty20 form of the game. It has been a tough week. But the guys focused 100% on their cricket, and we enjoyed our win.

Shahid Afridi issues apology on behalf of Pakistan's scandal-hit trio

Pakistan's one-day captain, Shahid Afridi, has issued a remarkable public apology on behalf of the three players at the centre of cricket's betting scandal. "I think it is very bad news," he said. "On behalf of these players – I know they are not in this series – but on behalf of these boys I want to say sorry to all cricket lovers and all the cricketing nations."

Afridi was at pains to distance himself from those implicated in the betting scandal – the Test captain, Salman Butt, and the fast bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif – as he arrived at nets ahead of Pakistan's Twenty20 game against England in Cardiff tomorrow.

Cricket-England romp to victory over dismal Pakistan

Pakistan could not cope with either a barrage of short-pitched bowling from the England pacemen or the slow bowling of Graeme Swann and Michael Yardy.

Umar Akmal hit Swann for two straight sixes into the sightscreen but was bowled for 17 when the England off-spinner kept his nerve and floated up another tempting delivery. Yardy was again economical, conceding 10 runs from his four overs.

PCB announces new policy regarding managers

The players’ agent Mazhar Majeed, the central character in a nasty spot-fixing saga in England involving Pakistan players, has been allegedly found involved in the scam as a bookie.

Champions League Twenty 20 - Champions league 2010

Well it was a great match every tournament would like to have as beginning match. Close encounter that in the end Lions managed to win. They defeated Mumbai Indians by 9 runs. I think Kevin Pollards wicket was the turning point of the match had he playeh one over more result of the match would have been different.

I still favor him being pushed little ahead in the batting order, a pinch solid hitter like him should be given chance to play more ball, I even don't mind him opening handful of matches as an experiment. Perhaps Mumbai Indian had moved him to bat earlier in the IPL final against they would not be the runners up they could have been the champions.

Tomorrow is a double masti day, you can watch Wayamba from Sri Lanka playing the hosts Warriors, and in the second match you have IPL champions Chennai Super Kings compete the Central Districts from New Zealand.

February 15: Australia v South Africa in Bangalore, Ireland v Zimbabwe in Nagpur, Kenya v Netherlands in Pallekele, Bangladesh v Pakistan in Dhaka

February 16: India v New Zealand in Chennai, Sri Lanka v West Indies in Colombo, England v Canada in Dhaka

February 18: England v Pakistan in Dhaka

Given the current news of betting and spot betting, I am sure the bookies will be targeting world cup lets see if Indian police or other crime investigation departments will be able to keep a check on this. If a control on betting is not there the game will soon loose its charm to other games.

England vs Pakistan 4th Test Match Result - England won by an innings and 225 runs

England duly completed an overwhelming innings-and-225-run victory over Pakistan, before lunch on the fourth day at Lord's, to take the series 3-1 but that faded into insignificance following the spot-fixing revelations which broke on Saturday evening and sent the game spiralling into another crisis.

For the record, Graeme Swann claimed his ninth five-wicket haul, and his first at Lord's, while Umar Akmal biffed a late half-century.

Even the not-out batsmen, Azhar Ali and Umar Akmal, couldn't have a quick hit before resuming their innings and the contest was never going to last very long.

England 1st Innings 446/all out; 139.2 overs (Trott 184, Broad 169, Amir 6-84)

Pakistan 1st Innings 74/all out; 33 overs overs (Butt 26, Swann 4-12, Finn 3-38)
